In the ready-mix concrete (RMC) industry, pumps are crucial for transporting concrete from the mixer to the point of placement, especially in high-rise buildings, long distances, or difficult-to-reach areas.

Here are the main types of pumps used in the RMC industry:

1. Truck-Mounted Concrete Pumps

  • Description: Concrete pump mounted on a truck chassis.

  • Use: Most common in urban and project sites; can reach 20–70 meters height or more.

  • Feature: Comes with a placing boom to distribute concrete easily at high elevations.

  • Example Brands: Putzmeister, Schwing Stetter, SANY.

2. Stationary (Static) Concrete Pumps

  • Description: Fixed pump placed at a site; concrete is pumped through pipelines.

  • Use: Useful for very high-rise buildings (even 500 meters+), long-distance pumping.

  • Feature: Requires separate pipelines and manual handling.

  • Example: Used where truck-mounted pumps cannot access.

3. Line Pumps (Trailer-Mounted Pumps)

  • Description: Smaller, portable pumps mounted on trailers.

  • Use: Good for smaller projects, low-rise construction, and inside-city works.

  • Feature: Easier to maneuver; uses flexible hoses or steel pipes.

4. Boom Pumps

  • Description: A truck-mounted pump with a large robotic arm (boom).

  • Use: For reaching over obstacles, buildings, or for very tall pours.

  • Feature: The boom length varies (28m, 36m, 42m, etc.).

5. Specialized Pumps

  • High-Pressure Pumps: For extremely long pumping distances or high-rise vertical pumping (needs very high PSI).

  • Grout Pumps: For small concrete jobs, masonry grouting.

  • Shotcrete Pumps: Used for spraying concrete (e.g., tunnel linings, slope stabilization).

Related Industry Terms:

  • Boom Length: Important selection factor (e.g., 36-meter boom).

  • Pump Rate: Cubic meters per hour (e.g., 90 m³/hr).

  • Boom Pump vs. Line Pump: Boom pumps are faster and automated; line pumps are flexible but labor-intensive.
